- Ricky Gervais posted several transphobic tweets ahead of his hosting gig at the Golden Globes.
- Twitter is extremely hurt and upset by the actor’s comments, which come days after J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweet.
Ricky Gervais just posted a series of transphobic tweets ahead of his Golden Globes hosting gig, and people are….less than impressed. On Friday, the actor seemingly responded to J.K. Rowling’s tweet supporting a British researcher who was fired after expressing anti-transgender sentiments. The Harry Potter writer faced a huge amount of backlash for her tweet, and apparently Ricky is in her corner, responding to a satirical article with “Those awful biological women can never understand what it must be like for you becoming a lovely lady so late in life. They take their girly privileges for granted. Winning at female sports and having their own toilets. Well, enough is enough.”
Oh, and in response to a follower who asked him to be kind, Ricky wrote “Exactly. We need to protect the rights of women. Not erode them because some men have found a new cunning way to dominate and demonise an entire sex.”
Yikes. As you’d expect, Ricky is getting a lot of backlash:
He later tried to pass off his comments as jokes, which, uh…okay:
And then finally, he said this—but not before hurting a huge amount of people in the process:
To quote author Amanda Jetté Knox’s reply to J.K. Rowling, “The world’s most credible medical orgs affirm trans people. Please catch up.”
