Basket Weave With Two Buns Tutorial

Look, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: When it comes to protective styles, locs and faux locs can be styled into some of the most creative and dynamic looks out there. Like, the limit does not exist when it comes to the number of ways you can dress up locs. And in case you need even more proof, just look at this week’s Braid Up hairstyle—aka this super-pretty basket weave with two buns.

Through intertwining your locs and twirling your hair into double buns, you’re able to create a look that’s legit out of this world. Stasha Harris, our braid expert, is swapping seats this time around—she’s the model and Sherelle Holder, hairstylist and locs specialist, is the one bringing the look to life.

Here’s what to keep in mind when creating this style and taking care of your locs:

1. Lather up with a clarifying and moisturizing shampoo. You want to make sure you get rid of any and all buildup before you start twisting. P.S. Avoid heavy, cream-based shampoos—they can leave behind residue, which is not cute.

2. Re-twist with a hydrating butter or cream. If your locs are looking a bit fuzzy and that’s not your vibe, use a light-hold curl cream to smooth out your look. The right formula (like one of the below) will also give you long-lasting definition.

3. Make leave-in conditioner your BFF. You can’t walk around with thirsty-looking locs, k? Look for a lightweight formula that’ll boost your hydration levels without weighing your hair down.

4. Oil your locs regularly. Massage an oil (think: grapeseed or jojoba) from the mid-shaft of your locs to your ends to prevent any greasy buildup on your scalp. It’ll give you some nice shine while also locking in moisture.
