Even though I have access to preeeeeetty much every beauty product in the world, I have notoriously dry, cracked, and chapped-as-hell lips. I’ve tried every lip balm, serum, and overnight mask you could think of (yes, even that DIY concoction your friend’s sister’s mom keeps raving about on Facebook), but my lips are still drier than the g’damn Sahara Desert. And considering chapped and angry is my baseline year-round, you can imagine how gnarly things get come wintertime (it’s fun! I’m fine!).
All of this is to say that when I heard Japanese brand Boscia launched a new lip serum—the Cherry Blossom & Bakuchiol Resurfacing Lip Repair—I was fairly certain it would do precisely nothing for me and my situation. But since testing new sh*t is the name of the beauty-editing game, I went ahead and smoothed it all over my lips one night last week before bed and waited for the formula to, well, do its thing. Which, to my surprise, it did very, very freaking well.
Spoiler: I’m actually obsessed
First thing’s first: The texture is a gel-cream hybrid that leaves me with a subtle, gloss-like finish. Like, it definitely looks like I’m wearing something when it’s on, but it wouldn’t necessarily compete with lipstick if I chose to layer it. And, not only does it not feel sticky or tacky like some lip formulas, but it dries down fairly quickly—which is ideal for before-bed appliers like me; I just swiped it on, went to sleep, and woke up with, well, pretty damn smooth lips.
Even though my cracks and dry spots were still there, they looked and felt noticeably better (read: less like sandpaper, more like human lips). I gave it another go the next night and the formula, yet again, surprised me in the morning: My lips looked like they were actually on their way to the plump, soft, and Instagram-worthy texture I had basically written off for myself. Which, uh, what…? And since I’m a science > magic kind of gal, I went to the ingredients list to figure out WTF was in this mysterious little product.
Here’s the DL
The coolest thing about the formula is that its spiked with bakuchiol (pronounced “buh-koo-chee-all”), the only 100 percent natural, plant-derived ingredient that works just like retinol to stimulate new collagen production, smooth skin, and plump lines. Bakuchiol has been trending for a minute in the skincare community for being a gentler, natural anti-aging option, but Boscia is one of the first brands to throw it into a lip product.
It’s not just for show, either—bakuchiol is kinda a genius ingredient for severely chapped lips, because even though retinol boosts your skin’s collagen production too, it’s often too for sensitive skin types. The fix? Bakuchiol, which studies have confirmed is just as effective as retinol and significantly less irritating. The serum is also packed with powerful hydrators (like castor and jojoba seed oils) and smoothing alpha-hydroxy acids (like lactic acid) that work together to moisturize and plump even the saddest of lips—basically, a no-brainer for my already-dry lips.
Trust: It’s worth the buy
Needless to say, I’ve been slathering this bb on every night before bed—and I’ve even doubled up with a quick layer or two in the morning—and my lips have never looked better. Are my days of chapped lips totally gone? Probably not (genetics, amirite?), but when I’m in need of a quick fix that actually makes a difference, you know I’ll be looking toward this serum.
