IDK about you, but my mom used to throw my hair in rubber-band ponytails literally all the time— so I def understand why the look gets a reputation for being a little juvenile. But this week on The Braid Up, we’re giving you the grown-up, 2020 version: It’s chic, it’s sleek, and, trust me, you’re going to absolutely love it. Our braid guru, Stasha Harris, shows us how it’s done.
Here’s everything you need to know before you recreate the look:
1. Give your scalp some TLC. It’s super important to keep your natural hair clean and moisturized if you’re trying to promote growth while you’re wearing a protective hairstyle. Spritz a leave-in conditioner on your scalp to help hydrate any dry patches.
2. Use a rat-tail comb for those tiny braids between each square—it’ll help you get your parts as sharp and sleek as possible. Same goes for your edges.
3. Get yourself some long hair extensions. Even if your hair is already long, you’re going to need them—trust. They add tons of volume and length, giving you that perfect ass-grazing pony.
4. Smooth two or three pumps of mousse on top of your braids. This helps prevent frizz and flyaways from popping up throughout the day. Work the mousse through your hair in the morning, wrap it up, and then hit it with a blow dryer.
