Was 2020’s socially distanced Virtual Emmys the weirdest awards ceremony of all time? Possibly! But did we mention that it was 2020? People are trying! And we can’t help but be appreciative of their efforts to give us all something pretty and fabulous to look at. The conventional wisdom going into the night was that the at-home “attendees” and nominees were not likely to be giving us the high-fashion moments of Emmys past. Without a red carpet, the thinking went, what would be the point of stars getting dressed up to stay home?
But thankfully, the stars and their stylists evidently disagreed, because the nominees and presenters of the 2020 Emmys put in the effort and gave America the moments of high glam and occasional elegance that we’ve all been craving. A little shot of sparkly normalcy in the midst of all this. It felt hopeful, like our favorite stars were letting us know that they’re still going to do their best to entertain and dazzle us. So let’s celebrate and salute that by picking the most memorable looks of the night. We’re feeling nothing but love!
Um, Wow Chic: Regina King
Regina King wowed us twice. First, by modeling this drop-dead gorgeous Schiaparelli gown for the virtual Emmys, taking full advantage of the fact that she wouldn’t have to travel in the puffy confection.
Statement Chic: Regina King
During the livestream of the E! red carpet and the show, however, she gave a quietly powerful message by sporting a Breonna Taylor t-shirt emblazoned with “SAY HER NAME” under a brilliant pink suit, looking chic, cool, and social justice-oriented all at once.
Couture Princess Chic: Zendaya
First-time nominee Zendaya was not going to let this socially-distanced Emmys ceremony put a dent in her fashion. The Euphoria star showed up to the ceremony to present wearing this dramatically geometric Christopher John Rogers gown, providing the mega-fashion moment we were hoping for.
Jaw-Dropping Second Dress Chic: Zendaya
Later, she accepted her trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in this fun, sexy and sparkly sequined Armani Prive polka dot skirt and bandeau top that was the picture of youthful effervescence; perfect for her giddy acceptance speech.
If-It-Ain’t-Broke Chic: Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston came to literally put out fires started by Jimmy Kimmel, so maybe we should cut her a little slack for wearing yet another simple black vintage Dior gown she may or may not have worn about a thousand times before. If it gets the job done, why not go with what works?
Bold and Bright Chic: Issa Rae
Insecure star Issa Rae brought statement-making color and an absolutely killer hair game to the proceedings, sporting a bright-orange Sergio Hudson gown with a retro 1940s film noir femme fatale feel, an upper ribcage cutout, and a button loop trim that lent it a deadly sexy feel.
Bombshell Chic: Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox came out to present the Emmy for Writing for a Dramatic Series, but served up her own drama, first by sashaying out in this jaw-dropping black and sheer gown with a hieroglyphic detail, then by quoting from Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem” to express her frustrations. It was real, it was raw, and she looked amazing doing it.
